My Dogs: Kaili

Pedigree name: Bea
27.03.2009 – 03.05.2022

Kaili was my very first dog, and she was incredibly special to me and my family. We had originally reserved a rottweiler, but a series of coincidences brought Kaili into our lives instead. I had the privilege of the first pick from a litter of eight.

Back then, I didn’t know anything about choosing a puppy—I couldn’t assess structure or personality—so I simply chose her because I liked her. And it turned out to be the best decision of my life. I can’t imagine who I’d be without her or what I’d be doing. I owe her so much.

Maruša & Kaili - her first dog

She was the smartest dog I’ve known. When you looked into her eyes, you could see she was always up to something—usually something involving food. No one could guess all the things she considered edible or the creative ways she’d find to get to them. Even though we locked everything away, she regularly managed to steal, eat, or try something just to see if it was edible.

Besides being a food maniac, she was a real show-off. She loved being the center of attention and enjoyed competing more than any of my other dogs. At the start line or on the podium, she’d always glance around to make sure everyone was watching her.

All of these traits made her an incredible performance dog. When she first appeared at an agility competition, people doubted her because she was only about 44 cm at the withers and had fairly short legs. Back then, there was no intermediate category, so she had to compete with the large dogs jumping 65 cm! But she quickly showed everyone what she was made of—I called her my “44 cm of CHAMPION.”

Of course, her non-sporty structure eventually took its toll, and in 2017, I decided to retire her from sports. I wanted to keep her as fit as possible for our daily walks and hikes. She passed away far too soon, at the age of 13, due to transitional cell carcinoma. Even while on chemo, she never lost her spark, reminding me that we need to live each day to the fullest.
